The last two years have revealed even further how incredible and valuable skilled nursing centers and their staff are to those they serve. When families couldn’t see their loved ones, it was staff who stepped up to provide more comfort and connection, all while trying to care for residents during a pandemic. Now, more than ever, those in skilled nursing are experiencing burnout and need appreciation and self-care.
There is plenty of research to support the stress-reduction properties of essential oils. In fact, at West Virginia University Cancer Center nursing staff felt especially during the pandemic they found relief from aromatherapy and in return, felt they could provide better care. Staff will not only appreciate the gift of self-care to support them on the job but will learn how the benefits carry over into the quality of care they provide residents.
Skilled nursing is not for the faint of heart. Work days can be tense, especially when there are layers of added emotions and stress from the pandemic, being understaffed, etc. Essential oils have a positive and often profound impact on the emotions. They help boost morale, enhance empathy, improve communication, team-build, and even reconnect us to our purpose so we find more fulfillment in our jobs.
